Some people have a legitimate reason to feel depressed, but not me. I just woke up one day feeling sad and helpless for absolutely no reason.

Being sad for no reason sucks. When you’re sad, you look for what is making you sad and you try to change it. So what do you do when you can’t see the reason for your sadness?

I hoped it would go away after a few days, but it didn’t. The sadness didn’t go away.

So, I tried to force myself to stop being sad.

‘Maria, stop being sad. Stop it. Right now. Stop.’

But telling myself that didn’t work. Because trying to use willpower to overcome the apathetic sort of sadness that accompanies depression is like a person with no arms trying to punch themselves until their hands grow back. A fundamental component of the plan is missing and it isn’t going to…
